Candida Overgrowth: Getting to the Root

Why Candida keeps coming back after every cleanse, the terrain that lets it overgrow, and the step-by-step approach I use: starve it, crowd it out, repair the gut lining and rebuild the flora.

Why Candida keeps coming back

Hey everybody, welcome back. Today we're talking about Candida, and specifically why so many people do a Candida cleanse, feel better for three weeks, and then it all comes right back. The sugar cravings come back, the bloating comes back, the brain fog comes back.

The reason is simple. Candida is a normal resident of your gut. It's not an invader that showed up out of nowhere. It overgrows because the environment lets it. If you kill it back but don't change the environment, it grows right back into the same space.

The terrain: what lets it overgrow

So what changes the terrain? The big ones I see are rounds of antibiotics, a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates, low stomach acid, chronic stress, and blood sugar that swings up and down all day.

Antibiotics clear out the good bacteria that normally keep yeast in check. Sugar feeds the yeast directly. Low stomach acid means food isn't broken down properly, so more of it ferments lower down. Each of these on its own is manageable. Stack three or four together and you've built Candida a home.

Common signs people miss

Strong sugar and bread cravings, bloating that gets worse through the day, a white coating on the tongue, recurring yeast infections, itchy skin or ears, athlete's foot or nail fungus, and brain fog after meals.

None of these alone means you have Candida overgrowth. But if you're nodding along to five or six of them, it's worth looking at. A practitioner can run a stool test or an organic acids test to get clearer data.

Step one: starve it and crowd it out

Step one is diet. For four to eight weeks, cut out added sugar, refined flour, alcohol and most fruit juice. Build meals around protein, healthy fats and lots of non-starchy vegetables. Garlic, onions and leeks are your friends here.

At the same time we use herbal support. I like a wormwood-based complex during this phase. Go slow. When yeast dies off it can make you feel worse for a few days, so start low and build up.

Step two: repair and rebuild

This is the step almost everybody skips. Once you've knocked the overgrowth back, you have to rebuild the flora and support digestion so the terrain stays healthy. That means a quality probiotic, digestive enzymes if your digestion is weak, and fermented foods as you tolerate them.

This is also where blood sugar matters. If your blood sugar is swinging all day, you'll crave sugar, and sugar feeds yeast. I have a whole video on blood sugar regulation that pairs with this one.

Putting it together

So the order is: change the terrain, clear the overgrowth gently, rebuild the flora, and keep blood sugar steady so the cravings don't drag you back. Plan on two to three months, not two weeks.

Everything I mentioned is linked below this video. If this helped, share it with someone who's been fighting this for years. Take care of yourselves, and I'll see you in the next one.
